Be A Man - this song is definitely mocking american ideology. the world expects every "man" to be the same - show no emotion, play soccer and football etc. to be a man you have to rape (ie: you'd rape us all just cause you can). i reckon courtney wrote this song not only to have a bitch about the way america perceives manhood, but also take a stand and say "hey.. the only guys i like are one's who don't give in to what the world expects them to be".

Be A Man - This was a celebrity skin out take. Later released in the sound track any give sunday where the song fit perfectly. This song is about the society levels of how men are suppose to act and how sexist it could become. Guys rape they don't cry but do they have the world at their finger like courtney does but she fucks the world because i can, thats the stereo type that people have of men.

Bible Belt - well im not for sure but just by reading the song a few times it seems that it might have something to do with the whole fack of what people say about courtney in the media. people always point the funger at her for the crazy shit she did and this is her song say well look at you and fuck you. read it then think of what i said...

Gold Dust Woman - this song is about a woman, she's powerful, beautiful, but she's not happy inside. She's not fullfilling her potential..." in the shadow of a gold dust woman..." she could be more, but people drag her down, breaking her world into peices time and time again, and she doesn't quite know how to pick herself up. Sometimes, she does to herself..

Whose Porno You Burn (Black) - i believe this song is an interpretation of an earlier burn black.i have a copy of this song on the violet single... im not certain when this was actually written, but the one i have is performed after kurts death. not to say every hole song is about kurt, but he did play an important role in cloves life. take the opening lines: "where is the needle/where is the gun/where is the bullet/i want some..." to me this song radiates alot of anger and despair. "just masturbate yr life away", "if you dont listen to what i say" she tried to save kurt from drowning... she tried to get through to him...

Best Sunday Dress - to me, this song is about someone who is being a total fake, and they "put on their best sunday dress" or dress up all pretty and make their life a mess, all the while everyone is watching and not really doing anything. the later lines about "pale blue eyes" and such are references to kurt cobain, i do believe. also, it's kind of weird because the song "lashes" by babes in toyland has this line in it, that goes "so i put on my best sunday dress/and walked straight into this mess/posing as a guest or something no less than a crazy old doll in a crazy old dress" which seems to tell basically the same story.

Best Sunday Dress - I'm sick of everybody trying to say that all hole songs has to do whit kurt cobain, courtney wrote this song even before meet kurt, if you listen the #9 track of the album pretty on the inside you can listen a piece of this song, and the album is from 1991. This song is about when you are a completly fake and you want to apper what you're not puting on your best sunday dress but at the end you walk in your own mess.

Best Sunday Dress - In response to the response above: Remember, though, that the version heard in Pretty On The Inside is an early one, also heard on Unplugged. Here, there are only three lines repeating over and over. The revamped version (found on the Celebrity Skin single), with the "pale blue eyes" reference must have been written at a later date. I'm not saying that it IS a Kurt reference, I'm just saying it's a possibility, given the time period.

Best Sunday Dress - Best Sunday Dress's lyrics changed as the years progressed. I do believe this song refers to Kurt more than most songs by Hole do. I think Best Sunday Dress represents the bad times where you sometimes have to wear a dress... like at funerals, at court or even at weddings. Maybe this song formed into a song on how she believed it was her fault Kurt killed himself. It's almost as though she's telling people that she came all undressed and she's ready to confess that she could've saved him... which is twisted because she had already saved him before, many times before.

Best Sunday Dress - This song to me was always about having a perceived state of grace. Like the world is falling down around you but you still put on your make-up, your dress, and you walk through the fires. This song always goes through my head at funerals. It seems like a grieving widow song. Like at the funeral you're all dressed up, walking to the grave site or whatever and it's such a mess and you're such a mess but, in a purely jackie o. way, you have grace on the outside.

Best Sunday Dress - This song was written in about 1990 or a little bit before they started to record PRETTY ON THE INSIDE with front woman of sonic youth Kim Gordon. This song is about cortney when she was going through a hard time at the time she was sort of seeing kurt. Cortneys best sunday dress was a trift store dress she would wear and the reason she uses sunday is because at the time she thought she was being crucified for some of the things she had done and she knew it was her own mess but yet she walked right into them and held her head up and even though she was being defeated she kept on walking and watching herself being burnt.

Best Sunday Dress - i interpret best sunday dress to be about someone who is really bad and and really kind of 'dirty', but tries to hide their real self by 'dressing up'.. and trying keep everyone from seeing themselves for who they really are, and where they really came from, so they can put up front of niceness, sincerity, and 'stableness' so they can walk into their messes, and try to make everything better for everyone... and try to be everyone's saviour, when, their own world is already crumbinng at their feet.. what have they got left to do but to put on their best sunday dress.. and pretend that nothing is wrong.. and its not happening? there is really is really a lot more wrong going for yourself then anyone else.. but you do it anyway.. so no one will question your past.. or who you are.. or the messes you've walked into. in this case.. i think this particular mess for courtney is "glorious fame"..and dealing with it.. she "came here all undressed" thinking that no one would notice the 'dirtygirl' she really is.. and was 'bunred' for it.. and had to put on her best sundaydress, to be relived, {and in a way make fun of}of who she is... these best sunday dresses are! maifested into the babydoll dresses she was do known for.. because they made her look nice and sweet.. something that many people know.. she isnt 100% sugar. its all about fooling people with a front, so you can do what you really want to, without them wondering who you actually are.

Best Sunday Dress - I personally think its about kurt. Like "oooh i'm coming undone, he comes from the coal mine". And "i put on my best sunday dress, and walked straight into this mess of mine" like she just tried to be strong and finally dealt with what was coming, or sort of made it worse. "to the wind and the rain and the glorious fame" i think that she was watching him burn, amongst it all. plus she loves it.

Johnnie's In The Bathroom - i think this song is supposed to represent someone's trip, in a surreal sort of way. have any of you babies seen the movie 'easy rider'? well the seen from that where everyone goes off on acid trips reminds me so much of this song. in general it doesn't have any significant meaning.

Johnnie's In The Bathroom - This is definitely a sick song. I think is bout teenage girls who are fooled with the "being a model, being a star" stuff and then thay are prostituted. "Who wants dinner when you could have a goddamn good dick up to your ass" - Who wants to be a model when you can be a slut and earn more and being much more famous.

Pale Blue Eyes - The perfect grunge love song. This is obviously not about this perfect love you read about at novels or see in the movies, but it's intense just as much or maybe even more. This is about one fuck up loving another fuck up, in a generation where everything goes. "thought of you as my mountain top, I thought of you as my peak, thought of you as everything that I had and I couldn't keep" that's sounds like someone who had his share of suffering in this life, and his love is the only good/true/perfect thing in his messed up and confused life. I guess that's why I love this song so much, it's so true, it comes from the pit of the stomach and although it's about a painful, and deep subject the lyrics are quite humorous.

Pale Blue Eyes - well considering that this song is a Velvet Underground cover, it didnt come straight from Courtney's brain onto paper in scribble and end up on Ask for It, but i think that listening to it... obviously she put alot of cringing emotion into that song, and i think that somewhat she maybe dedicated it to kurt... or someone else that meant THAT MUCH to her... but its a great song with alot of good lyrics, and of course she cleverly changed the lyrics somewhat "oh i will never fuck anyone else again" was added :)
